Welcome to VT Mommies!

Welcome to the VT Mommies site. I’m Melissa, and I’m so excited to kick off this new community of Vermont moms!

A Little About Me

Born in New York, I went to college in Kentucky and grad school in Colorado. I spent a little time in South Carolina before moving to Vermont in 2005. My background is in marketing and graphic design, and I am currently the Social Media & Communications Manager for a local trade organization.

I have two wonderfully rambunctious children, who I shall refer to on this site as Max & Ruby. Max is 9, a sensitive artist who wiggles and talks non-stop. Ruby, 3, is my little diva. She inherited both my attitude and my love of shoes, much to her father’s dismay. My fiance, who I shall refer to on this site as my husband since we’ve been engaged forever, is handsome, funny and wonderfully supportive.

In addition to VT Mommies, I also run a blog called Social Amateur, which focuses on tips and insight for small business owners just getting started in social media marketing.

The Story of VT Mommies

Ok, so there’s not really a big dramatic story with a VT Mommies epiphany at the end. It was actually just about being busy, and about feeling like perhaps I was losing a bit of myself in all of this domestic, mommy stuff. It was about making a decision to put myself on my own list of priorities, and to truly recognize that happy moms make happy families.

Between work, the kids, the house and my other blog, I don’t really get a lot of “free time.” And I don’t have the opportunity to connect with other local moms because, well, they’re in the same situation. I started thinking about ways to connect with other moms, to share experiences and tips for living healthy, happy lives as Vermont moms. To get together for “mommy playdates,” where we can talk about the kids, but also about local women’s issues, relationships, healthy living, food & wine, and, of course, shoes.

This site is the beginning of that community. It is a place where we can go and talk about us and the things WE need. The things WE are passionate about. The things that make us who we are.

I love my kids with every fiber of my being. I absolutely love being a mom, and I am proud to be defined as a mommy. Motherhood has changed me, and continues to change me every day. It’s not a bad thing. In fact, it’s a wonderful thing. But it seems to be something that only other mommies truly understand.

There are great resources for kids in Vermont. Find and Go Seek has a wealth of resources on kid-friendly events and attractions, and Kids VT is always full of great stories on children’s issues and local events. Both are amazing resources and I highly recommend checking out both on a regular basis.

But they are about the kids. VT Mommies is about us.

So welcome, pull up a chair, pour yourself a glass of wine and settle in. We are so happy you are here and we can’t wait to share with you.

And if you are interested in becoming a featured VT Mommies writer, let us know. We’d love to have you.
