VT Mommies

Love your family, love yourself

A mother of two boys can make life a little hectic. Add to that a full time job and it makes life a little more hectic.

Balancing work and life with the my family can be difficult but we make it work. We are always busy on the weekends whether its a sporting event for one of the kids, a birthday party, or just taking a road trip. My husband and I make it a point to take a road trip whenever we have a free weekend. The kids love it and are wonderful travelers.

In my blog I will write about balancing work and personal life and also great spots for road trips in or around VT. ENJOY!

Got Your Dairy Today?

We all know the importance of calcium for building and maintaining strong bones. The National Institute of Health’s Food & Nutrition Board recommends adult women get 1,000 mg of calcium each day, or about three cups of dairy products.

But how do you fit that much dairy into your everyday?

The Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, an organization of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, advises looking for low-fat or fat-free dairy, and using real dairy products in place of those with little calcium (like cream cheese).

For the past few months I’ve been tracking everything I eat,  and I noticed early on that I was not getting nearly enough calcium. Perhaps that’s why my bones creak and crack so much! I’ve been making an effort to get more milk and cheese into my everyday meal plan via smoothies, weight watcher cheese sticks and cereal, and have started taking 600 mg  calcium supplements make sure I get to my daily 1,000 mg.

And I’m all for a having a non-fat latte or plate of cheese and crackers in the name of good health.

The start of spring is exciting, and if you’re like me, you’re starting to bust out all of the skirts and strappy shoes that have been in the back your closet all winter. But you know how it is this time of year in Vermont. It could be snowing, or, as we recently saw, it could be 70 degrees. That’s why I love this outfit so much. It’s warm, but it still feels a bit like spring.

Pink & Black by vtmommies featuring long sleeve shirts

I love a pop of color in an otherwise neutral outfit, and this purse/scarf coral color is beautiful. With peach lip gloss and pinkish sunglasses it just all fits beautifully.

The skirt is actually a summer sundress, but with a black fitted long-sleeve shirt on top, it works great as a skirt. It’s from the UK, but any black skirt with a bold flowery white print will work. The length is great for the office and also allows you to bend down to pick up kids, toys, etc. without anything hanging out in the back!

The messy bun is fabulous, and I think it gives the whole outfit the “What? This outfit? I just threw this on in a wonderful rush as I headed out the door this morning!” kind of look. (The kind of look we sometimes strive for, but then we overplan and overanalyze and end up looking like we were trying too hard. Or maybe that’s just me.)

Here’s the breakdown on the pieces:

Sunglasses – $25 from Oasis
Snood Scarf – $24 from Miss Selfridge
Bag – $385 from John Lewis – I know… it’s a bit pricey, but certainly you can find something in a similar color that doesn’t break the bank at a local store.
Dress – $120 from People Tree
Shirt – $10 from Tillys
Shoes – $25 from Payless
